Chiaroscuro

Mary Magdalene by Georges de la Tour (1593-1652), Louvre, Paris
Georges de la Tour painted mostly religious scenes lit by candlelight, and after centuries of posthumous obscurity, during the 20th century, he became one of the most highly regarded of French 17th century baroque artists.

The Matchmaker by Gerrit van Honthorst (1625)
Gerrit van Honthorst's most attractive pieces are those in which he cultivates the style of Caravaggio. He had great skill at chiaroscuro, often painting scenes illuminated by a single candle.

I like this style, mainly because of the interplay between light and shadow. Such a strong contrast gives meaning to the image.
Perhaps we should try simulating candlelight tomorrow.
